Waou! The problem, I suppose, is that a lot of Mediterranean "virginicus" are now S. pungens ?

Yea, they were merged accidentally a few years back despite both being accepted by POWO. This split brings us back in line with their taxonomy

"merged accidentally"... I hate that. This is a big and recurrent problem, each time someone follows blindly a lumper point of view without criticism !

agreed. fortunately the ranges are distinct so it was easy enough to split them back.
