A Reminder and Baseline Numbers

Just a reminder that the identification marathon starts THIS Friday at 7 PM! I'll tag everyone at the end of this post, but I am thrilled that we have over 50 people already signed up for this project.

Also, this past weekend I noted some "baseline data" about how the Needs ID pile of New England and New York plant observations changed over the same time period as the coming ID-a-thon. I put "baseline data" in quotes because these numbers are just one snapshot in time, but they do give us some idea of the "usual" numbers of plant IDs that push observations to Research Grade or Casual over the course of a weekend.

So, at 7 PM this past Friday night, Feb. 16, there were 1,573,607 observations of plants in New England and New York that needed IDs. Those are all plants at all taxonomic levels. By 7 PM Sunday night, Feb. 18, there were 1,572,488 observations of plants in New England and New York that needed IDs. That's a decrease of 1,119 observations, a reduction in the overall Needs ID pile. Of course, there were also new plant observations being added over the weekend, but overall, the IDs out-weighed the additions. Note that this figure of 1,119 is a minimum number of plant IDs made over the weekend, because there were almost certainly IDs being made that didn't result in the observations moving out of the Needs ID pile - for example, an ID that moved an observation at the Kingdom level (Plantae) down to the genus level (say, Acer).

Can we make enough IDs during the marathon to reduce the Needs ID pile by more than this "baseline" of 1,119? Absolutely! Can we make more than 10 times that number? Maybe? Can we reduce the plant Needs ID pile by 1%, which is 15,000 to 16,000 IDs in just 48 hours? I don't know about that, but we can try! I'll be back tomorrow with a post on the various ways an observation can become Research Grade or Casual, but in the meantime, I'll tag everyone (not just project members) here one last time:

I’m excited! Thanks again for organizing this project. :D

@rinaturalist, thank you - it's so nice of you to say that!

Posted by lynnharper 3 months ago

hey Lynn, I add my thanks for your organizing the effort and I'll add something you've probably already done or thought about. I usually put "New England" into the location box for searching, sometimes I do a different phrase that includes New York and eastern Canada or the entire northeastern North America. Do you have a term we can use to select New England and New York together? Thanks. Pat

Posted by patswain 3 months ago

Hi, @patswain! As far as I know, there isn't a place name for New England and New York together. Friday evening, just before 7PM, I'll post a link to all the Needs ID plant observations for New England and New York, but here's a sneak preview: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?iconic_taxa=Plantae&place_id=52339,48 If you look at the last part of this URL, the number 52339 refers to New England and 48 refers to New York.

Posted by lynnharper 3 months ago

Good grief, I didn't know that could be done, you speak better computer than I do. Thanks.

Posted by patswain 3 months ago

You make me laugh, Pat - all I've done is stumble upon this post in the forum, which goes into detail about how to construct URLs: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/how-to-use-inaturalists-search-urls-wiki-part-1-of-2/63

Posted by lynnharper 3 months ago

@lynnharper just out of curiosity, do we know how many new plant observations were created in the same time period?

Posted by trscavo 3 months ago

@trscavo, I didn't write that down at the time (I do it for the actual ID-a-thon), but let me see if I can figure it out ... it looks as though 1,051 plant observations were added to iNat last Saturday and Sunday: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?created_d1=2024-02-17&created_d2=2024-02-18&place_id=52339,48&iconic_taxa=Plantae

Note that that filter URL does not include Friday evening from 7 PM on, but it does include all of Sunday, so it's an approximation. However, I think it's fair to say that means at least 2,170 (1,119 plus 1,051) IDs were made over the weekend. I'll tinker some more with the filter URLs to see if I can get more accurate numbers for ALL plant IDs last weekend.

I’m afraid I might have goofed your baseline numbers. There are so many plants needing ids in New York and New England that I’ve been working in New York so I can focus on New England this weekend. Illinois just posted their id-a-thon that runs now through the end of February, so I’ll be working there without adding to your baseline if you want to do another one.

Posted by maryah 3 months ago

Don't worry, @maryah, that's why I put the phrase "baseline numbers" in quotes. No matter when I choose to get a baseline, some prolific identifiers will be be off on vacation or concentrating on a different region or even out hiking all weekend, making observations of their own. I just figured that a weekend in February would be as close as I could get to a baseline for our actual event.

Thanks @lynnharper!

@patswain Oh, you can go crazy with search parameters if you're willing to type them into the URL! There's a guide here

thanks @lmtaylor

Can I invite someone not on your list? @chr3951 has been doing a lot of Eastern MA observations and IDs.

Posted by bkatzenberg 3 months ago

@bkatzenberg, you can invite anybody and everybody! My list is just those who are among the very active or have joined the project before, but everyone can join.

Posted by lynnharper 3 months ago

I love the idea of tagging everyone to get everybody's attention! What a great idea to bring eyeballs back to this project! Looking forward to putting in some observations and IDs this weekend.

I just posted this event to several plant-related Facebook groups. We'll see if anybody new shows up.

Thanks for the reminder! And thanks for including New York 😁
