Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 -Hobart

SciPubTas will be hosting a BioBlitz event,Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 -Hobart as part of Science in the Park 2021! A BioBlitz is a survey of biodiversity within a specified area time frame. During this period, participants aim to find and record as many species as possible within the time frame. BioBlitz' are a great way to learn more about the biodiversity of an area, including discovering new species and recording species range extensions.

The event will be run by local experts as part of the Great Southern BioBlitz. The Great Southern BioBlitz is an opportunity for all Southern Hemisphere countries to record organisms during Spring and showcase our beautiful biodiversity to the world. The event is run by a grassroots network of keen citizen scientists from across the globe. Come join in the Hobart event!
Hobart in spring is a wonderful sight. Did you know the most commonly observed species over spring in Hobart is the Tasmanian Eastern Rosella Platycercus eximius ssp. diemenensis seen below observed by ©di1975, some rights reserved (@di1975 ) with only 15 observations narrowly beating out the silver gull.

While everyone deserves a challenge I would like to set Tassie one, there have only been 1050 species observed in spring in the combined Glenorchy & Hobart area. are you up for the challenge of rearanging these numbers to 1500 species? There are plenty of amazing species including this one Maratus pavonis check them out, apparently they are really friendly and love to say 'Hi"

Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 -Surf Coast

Although the GSB is only in its second year, the Surf Coast region in Victoria, Australia, has been bioblitzing each spring since 2018, with our previous events taking place over the whole month of September. We will be looking to improve on our previous numbers of observations and species recorded, which has steadily increased every year.
Looking forward to being part of this amazing bioblitz of the southern hemisphere!

Personally, I would like to top 1000 observations of several hundred different species. On paper, it really shouldn’t be a problem - the Surf Coast is such a biodiversity hotspot, with the incredibly rich heathlands due to be in spectacular flower. The tall forests, dunes and other woodland areas each have their own unique floral ecosystems.

There is the small line of habitat where the land meets the ocean. Here we can observe the rich biodiversity of molluscs, seaweeds, crabs and echinoderms, protected inside one of our marine parks and reserves. These rockpool intertidal zones are always exciting to explore both day and night, it just has to be low tide!

Fingers crossed for clear water, the underwater camera might even get a chance to observe some of the many different species of fish that inhabit the shallow underwater reefs.

Although, the most likely source for massive numbers of species comes at night, when shining a light onto a white sheet can attract hundreds of different species of moths straight to your home.

Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 - Castlemaine Region

The Castlemaine Field Naturalist Club will be hosting the Great Southern Bioblitz in Central Victoria, specifically in Mt Alexander Shire and the eastern part of Hepburn Shire. This area is sometimes referred to as “Upside Down Country” due to the massive impact of mining during the 19th-century goldrushes and extending into the first half of the 20th century. Today the forests are slowly recovering and local Landcare groups are working to restore the creek-lines and degraded areas.
Our area is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora including a number of rare or restricted range species. Spring is the peak time for most species. Plants are flowering following the cool, damp winter and before the heat of summer. It is also the time when most fauna species are active.
One of our special species is the Eltham Copper Butterfly. Our area is home to the largest population of this endangered species which has a complex relationship with ants and the Bursaria that it feeds on. However, our most common butterflies include species such as the Meadow Argus which can be found during much of the year.

Our area is also known for a wide variety of orchids, many of which flower during spring. The Small Spider-orchid is an example of one of our local orchids that may be found during the bioblitz.

Our challenge is to document as many species as possible from our region so that we can track the recovery after the damage caused by mining. So please join us for the GSB, you may even be lucky enough to find a Platypus or Rakali in one of our creeks.

Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 - Greater Sydney

After a successful City Nature Challenge earlier in the year, the Southern Hemisphere once again gets the opportunity for a large-scale BioBlitz during its Spring, with the second edition of the Great Southern BioBlitz. This year's observation period will run from October 22nd-25th, the perfect time for birds, flowering plants, bugs and more. Large areas of Australia are meant to have a wet winter and early spring this year, so the conditions should be perfect!

Sydney is always a strong BioBlitz contributor; we managed to make more than 3,000 observations in this year's City Nature Challenge! My challenge to everyone is for Sydney to reach 3,500 observations during the Great Southern BioBlitz 2021.

During all of spring and across all years in Sydney, the most observed species is the silver princess cicada, followed by eastern water dragons, greengrocer cicadas and 8 bird species. Interestingly, during last year's event, the top 10 most observed species were much more of a mixed bag from a taxonomic perspective; 5 birds, 2 molluscs, an orchid, a shark and an insect. I'm looking forward to which mix of species we see this year, and will be aiming to see 50 new species I've never seen before :)

And of course, for anyone who won't be in Sydney or who can't participate, your identifications are also warmly welcomed.
