Just to clarify, does this mean there are records currently under trilobas you don't want to end up in the subspecies ?
No, I want all V. trilobas to be V. palmata ssp. palmata. But I can't do a swap from species to subspecies rank because the output taxon is less coarse than the input.
Can you just 'cheat' and edit the source record and change its taxonomy level to a subspecies (since it is going away as it is) and then run it ?
I've not encountered this that I can rememver.

I think so, I can't think of a technical reason why it would not. I've been wrong before, but I think it is a safe way to do it. The identifications dont care what level the taxa is at, moving it to a ssp even for a moment wont cause rg to go away.

Ok, I see it now that i tried to run it, you need to deal with the fact the V. triiloba has active children itself before you can run this, or set it to move the children automatically (which could get messy)
Ooooh. I see now. So I'd have to merge(?) all the children into V. triloba and then do the swamp to V. palmata ssp palmata?
Or determine if those named children actually have to get assigned somewhere else, I dont know that they may not themselves be synonyms of a different ssp etc.
The one called Cleft Violet has an observation so that is the more critical one, the other has none, so it is in less danger of being a problem.
But the active children is your problem.
POWO shows that there is only one accepted intraspecific for V. palmata, which is V. palmata var. heterophylla. The cleft violet, Viola triloba var. dilatata, is not a synonym of this var. so you can merge the children of V. triloba before merging V. triloba with V. palmata palmata without causing problems.

V. triloba is still a synonym of V. palmata on POWO, but it has been updated to also synonymize the varieties. The only potential issue I've found so far is that my online (outdated) copy of Weakley synonymizes V. triloba var. dilatata with V. subsinuata.
@cmcheatle what's the best way to reconcile this? I don't just want to swap all V. trilobas with V. palmata at species level...
